Post 6: Automatic Negative Thoughts and "your mind tapes"

Some people have written about the "tapes" that we play over and over in our heads.  Those people probably grew up in the 1970s or earlier before there was a CD or mp3 files.

Dr. Daniel Amen talks about Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs) and how we need to develop ANTeaters.

Here's a summary of his list of ANTs:

What ANT did you have recently?
What ANTeater can you use the next time that ANT appears?

  1. My comment is that for me the best way to combat a negative thought is to read the Holstee Manifesto. See this post http://thelastdegree.com/2013/03/21/this-is-your-life-poster/ and see this video on youtube. It is SUCH a cool video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDmt_t6umoY Old fashioned editing, inspiring music, and good camera angles. Nothing generated on a computer. Just good film making. I'm so inspired when I see the Holstee Manifesto that I cannot stay negative. I admit that at one time in my life I had thoughts of suicide. I thought it was an easy way out. I imagined that the work ahead was so unending and so heavy that it would be so much easier to fall off a cliff and I imagined how easy my life would be if I could avoid these problems. But then I read the holstee and every time I read it I remember the moment when I told myself, "I don't need to kill myself. I can get through this. There is so much to live for, even getting through the mess that lies ahead. I don't need to be negative. This is not work, it is OPPORTUNITY." So when I get negative thoughts, I just remember to look at the poster that is on my mirror. Thank you, Holstee.
